Mulan Rouge

"Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan, already the target of a boycott, has come under fire for filming in Xinjiang, the site of alleged widespread human rights abuses against Uighurs and other Muslim minorities.

"After the film’s release last Friday, observers noted another controversial element: in the final credits Disney offers “special thanks” to eight government entities in Xinjiang, including the public security bureau in Turpan, a city in eastern Xinjiang where several re-education camps have been documented.

"In 2017, on an apparent location scouting mission, (Director Niki) Caro posted a photo of rolling desert dunes and tagged the image “Asia/Urumqi”, referring to the capital of Xinjiang. One comment beneath Caro’s post said: Shame on you, #BoycottMulan and speak out against the #Uyghur #genocide!”"

"Filming took place in 2018, the same year China’s 'strike hard' campaign in Xinjiang ramped up with the construction of the (concentration camps). According to researcher Adrian Zenz, Turpan was the first documented case of “re-education” or political indoctrination used against Uighurs"

Dear Turpan Public Security Bureau,

Hello again, everyone!  I can't believe it's been two years since we filmed the story of your Great Heroine of the People, that spunky little gal we call Mulan, in your wonderful country. Time flies, huh?

I can't tell you how dazzled I was by Turpan. Obviously my bosses back in the Land of the Great Mouse were dazzled, too, because they approved the location on the spot. Did you see the movie yet?  Dazzling!

As you know, we had many concerns about the viability of filming in China. In particular, we had concerns about filming in Xinjiang. From everything you told us back in Beijing the Uighurs have been nothing but trouble lately. It's amazing everything went as smoothly as it did.

One of our biggest concerns was those  minarets. I thought we'd be hearing that wailing Call to Prayer five times a day, blaring out all over the city. But not so much as a peep! Thanks for your help with keeping the noise level down.

Of course we did have a little trouble finding local carpenters.  They were pretty scarce on the ground. Someone told me it was because they were all off building resorts, or maybe it was campgrounds. Luckily we had enough of our own guys to pick up the slack.

Anyway, thanks again for all your help. You guys are the best. Can't wait to work with you again- think "Mulan II!"

All the best,

Niki
