Such Lovely People

This appears on today's Powerline Blog:

"An Ideology of Hate

"Chief Justice John Roberts, in my view the most extravagantly qualified Supreme Court nominee in my lifetime, had a "benign idiopathic seizure" today. He's fine, but might be placed on anti-seizure medication since he also had one in 1993. This is how the prominent liberal web site Wonkette covered the news:

" 'Chief Justice John Roberts has died in his summer home in Maine. No, not really, but we know you have your fingers crossed.'

"A lot of them did, too."

Sometime it's hard to resist the old "if a conservative said that the press would be all over it" rant. DIH will resist, in the interest of not pointing out the incredibly obvious.

The Secret Revealed!

"Warming causing gray whales to lose weight, say scientists"

Jul 12 03:22 AM US/Eastern {h/t Breitbart,.com]

"Scientists on the US Pacific coast are increasingly observing emaciated gray whales in what they fear is a sign that global warming is wreaking havoc in the whales' Bering Sea summer feeding grounds.

""Instead of looking plump coming off the summer months, they have noticeable depressions behind the head, with scapulas visible through the skin, and concave sections above the tail," [the scienteist] added. "This is enough to cause alarm."

"'This is wonderul!'" - Rosie, a 35-year-old grey whale

"I've tried everything. SlimFast, Weight Watchers...finally, with 'Climate Change', I have the body I've always dreamed of!"- Jennifer, 42.

"I can't tell you how I despaired! Eating nothing but krill- krill!-- and still packing on the pounds. Now, thanks to 'CC,' I can eat whatever I like and still be one hot whale. Thank you, Climate Change!" - Jared, 28

"Hoodia, schmoodia. CC rules!" -- Oprah, 51.

In Other News, Scientologists Back Hillary

"FAIRFIELD, Iowa — Sen. Barack Obama drew his heartiest welcome of a two-day swing through Iowa in the state's capital of inner peace.

"To the frustration of the cameramen in the Fairfield town square, Obama delivered his remarks facing east, with the setting sun behind him blotting out their shots.

"But here, there’s a power even higher than the television networks: Obama had positioned himself in alignment with the rotation of the earth, in accordance with the teachings of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, whose followers moved en masse to this small Iowa city more than 30 years ago.

"The Maharishi’s transcendental meditators, along with vacationing pilgrims from the East Coast, turned out in large numbers in the town’s traditional green square to hear the Illinois senator deliver his stump speech on the night of July 3 — more people, Fairfield’s sheriff said, than had come out to greet a sitting president.

“I saw him and I thought, ‘Oh my god, this is somebody who could lead us into a new era,’” said Nancy Watkins, an international student adviser at the Maharishi University of Management.

"The meditators cheered Obama heartily — not at his occasional gestures toward political red meat, but at the lines that sometimes leave other audiences in silence.

They were responding to the senator’s call for national renewal that, though perhaps more Christian than New Age in concept, fit comfortably into a town square hemmed by shops with names like “Revelations” and the “Healthy Inspiration.”

“Somehow we have lost the capacity to recognize ourselves in each other,” Obama said, to an intently nodding crowd of at least 1,000. “You know, people talk a lot about the federal deficit, but one of the things that I always talk about is … an empathy deficit,” he continued, to applause."

Gentle Reader:

Anne Thompson at Variety.com links to a website that publishes one of those lists: "1001 Books to Read before You Die."
DIH has been perusing the list ( I gotta start doing the crosswords again).

I got to book #60 before I found one I read. then it turned out I was wrong. "City of God" by E.L. Doctorow. I read the one by that other guy.

Although I'm sure I've got copies of 72 and 86 somewhere, the next oneI'd read was #112, , The Information by Martin Amis. Read #129 (Captain Corelli's Mandolin) AND saw the movi--l that's got to be wotrth double points, right?

Read #147, The Secret History by Donna Tartt. No, wait- the spouse read that one and told me about it. Drat.

Saw the movie of #156 , The English Patient. Ech. Read #183, A.S. Byatt's "Possession." Hey- saw the movie of #157, too (Smilla's Sense of Snow). About as riveting as #156. Also saw movie of #190, The Remains of the Day. Also a highbrow yawner.

Yikes. I'm up to #200 and I'm not doing so good. And to think I went to college.

Wait! I read #218, Th Bonfire of the Vanities! In hardback no less! AND I saw the movie, the week it came out! Now that's definitely double points. Maybe even triple.

228, 229, 245- yup, read them. Saw the movies of 240 and 242and 272- The Color Purple. What a terrible movie! Even Speilberg seemed embarassed, as I recall from his appearance on the morning talk show circuit..

Read #291, A Confederacy of Dunces. Now we're getting somewhere! Wonderful book, with a preface by my fave, Walker Percy. Oh, and saw the miniseriesw of #295, Smiley's People by John le Carre.

Well that's about all the humilyt practice I can take for one night. If you go to

http://robstroy.blogspot.com/2007/07/1001-books-you-have-to-read-before-you.html

maybe you can work on your humility, too.

Now That's PR!

" Al Gore's son was arrested early Wednesday on suspicion of possessing marijuana and prescription drugs after deputies pulled him over for speeding, authorities said.
"Al Gore III, 24, was driving a blue Toyota Prius about 100 mph on the San Diego Freeway when he was pulled over at about 2:15 a.m., Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino said.

"The deputies said they smelled marijuana and searched the car, Amormino said. They found less than an ounce of marijuana along with Xanax, Valium, Vicodin and Adderall, which is used for attention deficit disorder, he said.

"He does not have a prescription for any of those drugs," Amormino said.

"Gore was being held in the men's central jail in Santa Ana on $20,000 bail."

Did you see that? Did yous SEE it?

That Prius was going ONE HUNDRED MILES AN HOUR!!!

That is the best publicity the Prius has ever gotten. Not just on overpriced, over-hyped heap for the Global Warming set now, is it?
