Weinstein Co. buys Dixie Chicks docu

NEW YORK -- Barbara Kopple and Cecilia Peck's politically charged documentary "Dixie Chicks: Shut Up and Sing" has been picked up for worldwide distribution by the Weinstein Co. A release is tentatively scheduled for the fall, possibly right before the November elections.
The film revolves around the aftermath of singer Natalie Maines' statement at a 2003 London concert, where she said, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."
(The Dixie Chick appeared here in the Cities recently. Four years ago they sold out 40,000 seats. This year they barely scratched 10K.)
Just so you know, girls- you can either a) shut up or b) sing.
You can't do both.
It's one of those basic human body things.
Bummer how reality does that, huh?

What kills me is how they whine about how their popularity has dropped off, "It's infringing on our freedom of speech!"
ReplyDeleteNo - it's not. They are allowed to say anything they want. Their fans are simple exercising their "freedom" not to buy their CDs or attend their concerts.
With free speech comes responsibility. You have to be willing to accept the fact that other people may disagree with what you say. Other people may not prevent you from speaking but they do have ways of voicing their own opinions.
I want to say that the title was more about telling them to shut up about politics and just sing. It was not to be taken literally. Also, surprisingly, their popularity has not dropped off, their last album is their biggest ever and they have had among the most airplay for both their first video and song this summer.
