In Case Anyone's Interested

The worldwide box office take for "Crash," this year's winner for Best Picture, is currently $83.4 million.

For first runner-up "Brokeback Mountain," $59 million.

For not-even-considered-for-Best -Picture "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe":

$388.3 million.

Go figure, huh?

  1. What a lot of people are NOT saying (but I firmly hold it to be true) is that the films nominated were pretty substandard fare. (Trust me, I minored in film.)

The best film last year, BY FAR, was Walk The Line, but it wasn't a film That Made A Statement, as is required by Oscar-bait films. It merely was brilliantly scripted, shot, acted and directed.

In fact, I can't recall the last time the Best Film Oscar(TM) went to the Best Film. I think it may have been Chariots of Fire.

  2. I agree - if you want the Oscar your film has to be promoting a liberal Hollywood agenda.

  3. DMG,

The annoying thing is that these films just COAST on the subject matter. Speaking strictly about film, you could make a movie with a liberal agenda that was actually well-made, engaging, and full of cinematic worth.

The thing is, they don't have to. Subject matter is all.

Someone should just make one about racist homosexual terrorists fighting the ghost of Sen. McCarthy (Joe not Gene) and that would guarantee said filmmaker accolades to last a lifetime and enough awards to require a trailer hitch and a U-Haul on the Bentley.

  4. Joke -

LOL! Just make sure your racist homosexual terrorists are Nazis and not Communists or Islamofacist.

You make a good point. These films only touch on the subjects.

  5. In his standup routine Rowan Atkinson had a gear bit about awards.

DMG, it is a well known fact that Communism was a fiction invented by Sen. McCarthy to take people's attention away from the fact Robert Kennedy asked him to be his child's godfather. Islamofascism, of course, does not exist.

  6. Oscars don't tend to go to the films that make the most money. Films that make the most money are crowd-pleasers, like Star Wars.

Think about it--what would happen to the Nobel prize for literature if it were awarded based on the number of copies sold? Dan Brown would win it.
